There’s something deeply comforting about cooking from-scratch in a cozy cottage kitchen as the seasons change. Over the years, I’ve collected a handful of cookbooks that have shaped the way I feed my family — focusing on nourishing ingredients, slow cooking, seasonal rhythms, and traditional food preparation.

These are the cookbooks I reach for again and again in our from-scratch cottage kitchen. Whether you’re learning to cook from-scratch, embracing seasonal living, or simply wanting more nourishing meals at home, these books are timeless resources worth keeping on your shelf.

1. Nourishing Traditions

If you haven’t stumbled into traditional cooking completely by accident then this is not the first time you are hearing of Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. Filled with wholesome warming broths, fermented foods and so much more, this cookbook is foundational to any nourishing kitchen.

2. Pipers Farm Sustainable Meat Cookbook

Pipers Farm Sustainable Meat Cookbook is such a valuable resource for families trying to cook more intentionally and respectfully with meat. It emphasizes using the whole animal, reducing waste, and creating deeply flavorful meals from simple ingredients. On top of its mouth watering recipes and stunning photography this cookbook also follows seasonal rhythms and shares its seasonal recipes by month.

3. The Nourishing Asian Kitchen

I discovered The Nourishing Asian Kitchen after hearing an interview of the author on podcast I love I was so inspired and new I had to have it. It did not disappoint. It stretched me and challenged me to new broth methods and flavor profiles that my pho loving husband would love to personally thank her for! We love the comforting warmth and rich flavors throughout this cookbook. Many of the recipes incorporate nourishing broths, fermented ingredients, warming spices, and deeply traditional cooking methods.

4. Batch by Fallon’s Table

This one may seem like an unlikely contender as it is not actually a physical cookbook but rather and downloadable pdf linked here. However, many of these recipes have become and absolutely staple in our home. Fallon writes and shared these recipes from a place of deep wisdom and food led healing. My kids particularly love her soups and he Maple Beef patties as a kosher breakfast sausage alternative.

    5. Love Real Food

Love Real Food many again seem like an unlikely contender as it is a vegan cookbook and a sharp contrast from the Sustainable Meat Cookbook in this list. However it is a must mention because the author packs a punch of nutrients in a wholesome and real food way. These are filled with hearty protein packed (meatless) dinner options the whole family can enjoy.

BONUS: Better Broths and Healing Tonics

Better Broths and Healing Tonics was the book that changed the game of bone broth hot chocolate for my family. These authors and nutrition experts married what they new about medicinal medicines and what they new tasted good. This book was done with excellence and is a must have in any cozy cottage kitchen.

Get to know me and my kitchen by following along. I share weekly meal ideas in hopes to nourish and inspire your love for cooking.
